Little Lion Cafe Case Study
The PCH Foundation approached Bellfort to design and construct a café within the new Perth Children’s Hospital. We saw it as a golden opportunity, and embraced it as one of our proudest achievements. Meeting state government, health and client guidelines for both design and construction fundamentals made that achievement yet another resounding success. Both for our team and ultimately our client. Approval processes were extremely tight due to the sensitivity surrounding this major Perth development. Plus, meeting strict criteria and working through intrinsic site restrictions, meant Bellfort’s attention to detail had to be exact. In addition to this, the PCH Foundation – the fundraising arm for Perth Children’s Hospital, had a limited budget. As a consequence, each design stage was aligned with construction proficiency and cost. Every sub-contracted element for the café interior design was scrutinised in order to ensure best value for money was achieved.
Cafe Design Inspiration
The challenge of creating an interior for both children and adults alike was highly motivating. Given the interior sits within a hospital environment, where visitors are often highly stressed or unwell, amplified this motivation. The result of which, was a need to create a magical sanctuary. A safe place that offered all age groups a place to escape from life’s harsh realities.
What better than a ‘Tree of Life’ to spread warmth and encourage a focus on nature within a clinical environment? The ground-breaking design of the Corian trees embraces the café space and augments specialist lighting features. Effectively, they colour a magical forest – that supports peace and harmony.
Even though the cafe’s ‘magic’ feel is a major highlight, we feel its important not to downplay it’s creation. Essentially, the superior construction skills that allowed everything to unite. Existing infrastructure limited the placement of essential services such as plumbing, lighting and partitioning. However, the enthusiasm of all trades involved in the project created a harmonious construction phase.

Design & documentation – Preparation of concepts, design development and construction drawings. All information to meet Building Code of Australia requirements.
Approvals – Obtaining state & local government approvals including building and occupancy permits.
Building Works – Installation of new plasterboard and glazed partitioning to form the outline interior shape. Facilitation of Corian tree structures including manufacture of internal lighting frames & operable security wall.
Services – Bellfort consultant design and installation of new electrical services including site mains and switchboard upgrade, new lighting, power, security and data services. New plumbing services including coring, underground pipework and commercial kitchen facilities.
Commercial kitchen – New stainless steel benches with integrated sinks, refrigeration and dishwashing. Ice maker, display equipment and integrated storage.
Furniture – Installation of custom-designed booth seating. Loose furniture installation including benches, tables and seating. Custom designed joinery integrated with stainless steel benching and back-of-house equipment.
Audio Visual – Installation of video wall facing the atrium with associated equipment and software.
Branding – Customised graphics with installation on glazing, walls, joinery and ceiling. Illuminated signage and POS chalkboard display.
