Design Scope

When tasked with creating a new hospitality interior within a derelict building in Subiaco, our creative energies were unleashed. Dating back to 1899, the building has an intriguing history. By removing the layers of time, interesting features were uncovered that were soon to star in this local gastropub.

While wanting to create a fresh bar and restaurant vibe within Subiaco’s heritage precinct, our approach was to restore. This of course had to make sense with budget and timing. But while full demolition would have been the easy way out, great features would have been lost in the process. When working on the initial design concept, our focus was on both form and function. As a gastropub, seating arrangements required flexibility to cater for various venue functions. And rather than create an openly-spaced venue, we opted for discreet separations of table groupings. This not only allowed us to utilise the buildings architecture, but also promoted a mix of dining experiences. Intimate dining spaces easily co-exist with pub style layouts and alfresco enjoyment.

One of the main features within Your Local is the detailed, coffered ceiling. Choosing to make the most of this unusual asset, each square was highlighted with a combination of paint and fabric panelling. There is nothing shy about the effect yet it still sits comfortably with it’s surrounds without being overpowering.

Polished concrete flooring and seating options are positioned around the central bar area. Plush upholstered benches and large format wall graphics are adjacently placed to increase interior depth. And when the locals look closer at the wall graphics and framed pictures, they’ll feel right at home. Street signs and the majority of decorative elements adorning this hospitality venue are Subiaco themed. And while exterior works were mostly restorative, the street facade has been rejuvenated with extensive clear glazing and lush foliage.
